Work undertaken by a engineering design service will vary considerably with different branches of industry. Generally, work of a “design and make” nature will follow a plant which sets out stages in development from the time a potential client makes an enqiry until the completed product is delivered. The function of the product will dictate many of the associated activities.

3D Laser Scan of a 1912 Sunbeam 12/16 Hubcap

3D Laser Scanning for reverse engineering is a very efficient and accurate way of optaining a 3D data for the input into CAD. This is required if no manufacturing drawings are available, but are required for production of additional parts.

The Next Engine 3D Laser scanner is used to scan a hubcup. The scan will be approx 0.1mm accurate.

After fusing all the scan data, the file is imported into Solidworks Premium.

Within Solidworks mesh data is preperared and a surface model is created (not on this video).

This hubcap is is then exported into Solidworks for reverse engineering. The result will be a new 3D Solidworks CAD model which can be used for input into a CNC machine.
