There are different methods of having a prototype made. This article focuses on the rapid prototyping process also known as 3D printing.
Very few prototyping companies offer all technologies, but some have a selection. The following are the main technologies used for 3D printing:
- Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
- Stereolithography (SL)
- 3 Dimensional Printing (3DP)
Prototypes are a key part in any design process. A prototype is part of proofing a concept idea works.
3D CAD is a major design tool these days and with animation and photo realistic renders a good tool in filtering through different concept ideas. For new design ideas a “proof of concept” and therefore a prototype is close to a must have, as the consequences of not having one could end up being a commercial disaster.
