Due to our extensive experience within the Rail industry we have a very good understanding of the requirements when converting AutoCad DWG files into standard compatible Bentley Microstation DGN files
Extensive Rail Industry experience enables us to provide compatible DWG to DGN CAD file conversion
What is a DWG to DGN CAD File conversion
Many companies produce their drawings such as Electrical Layouts, Component Drawings & Schematics in AutoCad from Autodesk.
However, certain industries have specific standards in regards to CAD file types to be used. The Rail Industry in the UK which includes Network Rail and LUL (London Underground Limited) use Bentley Microstation as their standard CAD Software.
Therefore, more often than not, suppliers have to provide their drawing in Microstation file format, which is DGN.
Autodesk AutoCad produces DWG & DXF files as standard
Bentley Microstation produces DGN files as standard
AutoCad have in the recent years added an export function within the Software which enables the user to Export to DGN.
Also, Bentley Microstation can open DWG files and save as DGN files.
Based on this, there should be no problem in the conversion.
Well it is all not that simple when you need to adhere to CAD Standards set out by for example Network Rail or LUL.
The files need to be referenced in a certain way (Xref for AutoCad) and also there should be specific levels used (layers for AutoCad).
How Jensen Consulting can assist with DWG to DGN Conversion
We fully understand the CAD Standards set out by Network Rail as well as London Underground.
First of all, we would obtain the relevant CAD Standard and if possible establish contact with a responsible person at Network Rail or LUL who we can work with. As these project are often multiple drawings. We have worked on projects from converting 10 drawings to +1000.
Usually the following work is required.
1. Clean out existing DWG File (remove redundant layers, blocks etc.)
2. Assign new Levels within Microstation
3. Reference and fill out new Titleboarder
4. Check all Reference Files
5. Check Model Origins
To assure standards are kept we would work directly with Network Rail or LUL should this be of preference.
How much does a DWG to DGN CAD Conversion cost?
This entirely depends on the quality of the existing DWG files and far they differ from the required CAD Standard. We would usually produce a sample file which then get signed off. Based on that sample file we would establish an average per file price. We are used to carrying out small projects as well as conversion from +1000 files.
How secure are is your information with Jensen Consulting?
Especially for work such as CAD Conversion many companies might seek to outsource this work to countries such as India as this seems cheaper in the first instance.
We would like to inform you that we as a company do not Outsource our work. All our work is carried out in our Hitchin based offices with our own dedicated severs.
The use of 3D modelling has become increasingly popular, and more and more traditional 2D-based manufacturers are beginning to recognise the advantage of communicating their designs in the 3D format. Although transferring across to 3D may at first seem a momentous...
