What is MEP Coordination?

Jensen Consulting offers a Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) coordination service. MEP coordination is the process of producing a 3D CAD Model (BIM) of all mechanical, electrical an plumbing services as to the MEP consultants drawings. The BIM model will also integrate the architectural BIM Model. The building services are then adjusted to eliminate any clashes with each other and the building fabric.

The coordinated BIM model is then used as a basis to produce 2D Shop Drawings (construction drawings) of each service for installation.

What is MEP Coordination used for?

MEP Coodination Process

The challenge of coordinating mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems is increasing rapidly as the individual system requirements are steadily increasing in complexity. The coordination process involves locating equipment and routing connecting elements for each system to avoid physical interferences.

Prior to Building Information Modelling, the process was to overlay all single services from the MEP consultants in 2D in conjunction with the architectural model to establish clashes. Once a clash had been identified the service was modified to eliminate the clash. This issue and is that most building services do not run in 2D, their heights change to suit the building and other services. Further, there was no tool such as Navisworks to allow clients and other trades to quickly review the coordinated services (as proof/QA of coordination).

Now, with the increased use of  Building Information Modeling (BIM) this process is now able to be carried out in 3D CAD. Vastly improving the process as it is a close virtual build of the MEP services. Each service can be visualised in a realistic manner including fittings, fixings and insulation. Further,  the coordinated services can easily be reviewed by non-technical, non-CAD users using software such as Navisworks.

MEP consultants will usually develop their drawings up to RIBA Stage 4. This means the technical design is complete, but the drawings are not fit for construction.

Depending if there is a BIM model available from the consultants our team of MEP coordinators will produce a new 3D CAD model using AutoCAD MEP of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing services based on the consultants’ drawings. The MEP services will all be coordinated with each other and the building fabric to assure a clash-free and maintainable installation.

From the 3D MEP BIM model, 2D drawings are produced for construction (RIBA Stage 5). These construction drawings (MEP Coordinated Drawings) are then used for installing the services.

MEP Coordinated Drawings

At Jensen Consulting we will usually produce a set of coordinated construction drawings from our coordinated MEP BiM model.

The initial set of drawings will be a set of combined services drawings. These MEP drawings are 2D plan drawings and sections showing all the services. The drawing intent is for proof of coordination and not installation.

Once the combined services drawings have been approved the single services drawings are produced for construction. These will contain all the relevant information to all the installer to install the service.

MEP Drawings

MEP Drawings often referred to M&E Drawings are shop drawings used for the coordination and installation of mechanical, electrical and plumbing building services.

Plant & Process Coordination

Part of the challenge when designing the pipework and instrumentation for a plant is avoiding clashes between the pipework, building structure and electrical components whilst ensuring future maintainability and system integrity.

Coordinating the routes in the design stage is very cost effective. Further, a detailed design including pipe fabrication drawings allows off-site pre-fabrication of the pipes which is considerably cheaper than welding on site.
